Shifts

Shifts can be used to close out a particular period of the day so other sales figures are not combined. Unlike most Point of Sale systems, you do not have to sign-in or start a shift. You assign the shift when you are ready to close it. This makes it easier for employees to start the day without any configuration or maintenance. Shifts are closed for each POS Outlet (Restaurant, Gift Shop, Bar, etc.)

For example, employees arrive in the morning and start ringing up checks in the restaurant for breakfast. In addition, the Gift Shop Outlet is opened and sales are being rung up in the Gift Shop also. Once the breakfast period has closed, each clerk runs their own shift report to close out their drawer and declare their tips. When the staff have closed out their checks and tips for the breakfast period, anyone who is a supervisor or manager closes out the shift for that POS Outlet by going to Other Functions > Employee/Report Options > Close Shift for (Outlet Name) from the iQ-POS Terminal screen. Once the checks have been closed for that outlet, they do not appear in the totals of the next shift's work. This includes Tips, Tip Outs, Cashier Reports and Recalling Checks. This allows an employee to work more than one shift for the same POS Outlet on the same day, and not see their sales combined on their shift reports.

Shifts can be closed with checks still open for an outlet, but to get the most accurate reporting, it is recommended that all checks for a specific revenue period be closed prior to closing the shift. Any checks carried over into the next shift and then closed will be included with the next shift. For example, just before the end of breakfast, guests come in for lunch and their drink orders are entered prior to closing the breakfast shift. When the breakfast shift is closed a screen will appear advising there is an open order, but giving the option to close the shift anyway. Select Yes and the breakfast shift is closed and all currently closed checks will be included in the reporting for the breakfast shift. The lunch check can then be completed and closed by the server using normal procedures and be included as part of the lunch shift, when that shift is closed.

If you recall a check, from a closed shift, the sales figures are still tied to that shift. It is important to rerun a Shift Report for a Shift / Employee if you change a check on a previously closed shift. If you wish the change to affect the current shift, you must void out the old check and re-enter it again, on the currently opened (unassigned) shift.

Once a Shift has been closed, you cannot reopen it.

Not every POS Outlet has to close a shift. Restaurants with only one menu or a Gift Shop do not need to close shifts to separate revenue.
